Tennessee Voter Project is dedicated to growing the number of registered Democrats and supporting Democratic candidates in the South. Part of that work is recruiting candidates who are serious about engaging the community and committed to making voting more accessible if elected.

Shelby County District Attorney
Steve mulroy
District Attorney Mulroy won his election in August 2022 with 56% of the vote. He is the first Democrat elected to the District Attorney's office in decades. He ran on a progressive platform of tackling violent crime while advancing criminal justice reforms. Since he's been elected, he's created the County's first Conviction Review Unit to investigate wrongful convictions. He's also revived the Economic Crimes Unit to target worker exploitation.

Shelby County Juvenile Court Judge

Judge Tarik Sugarmon was elected the first Black Juvenile Court Judge in Shelby County history in August 2022 with 44% of the vote. He brings a wealth of experience, including as a Public Defender and Civil and Criminal Case Litigator, to the office. He ran on a platform to expand diversion programs for youth, reduce the amount of youth transferred to adult court, and ensure fewer children cycle through the criminal justice system at all.

TN State Representative District 91
torrey harris
Representative Torrey Harris handily won his election to District 90 in November 2020 with 77% of the vote. He was elected again to serve District 91 in November 2022. Representative Harris is one of the first openly LGBTQ+ politicians to serve in the TN General Assembly. Since he's been in office, he's supported legislation to prevent discrimination based on natural and protective hairstyles, parents' rights, and paid family leave.

MSCS School Board Member
AMBER HUETT-GARCIA
School Board Member Amber Huett-Garcia won her election to represent District 8 in August 2022. She brings her experience in education at every level in the state, from operations and fundraising to budget and policy. School Board Member Huett-Garcia ran on a platform to improve physical safety and mental health services, for stronger success rates, and world-class facilities.

TN State Representative District 96
dwayne thompson
Representative Thompson flipped the formerly Republican District 96 in November 2016, winning by more than 50% of the vote. He's kept the seat for the last six years. Since he's been in office, he's supported legislation to expand access to healthcare, invest in public schools, and advance criminal justice reforms to offer ex-offenders a second chance.
